Huerhuero
Vineyard
This vineyard takes its name from the dry river
that borders its northern end. Huerhuero
(pronounced “where-where-O”) is an Indian
word that is difficult to translate, but probably refers
to the coarse “blonde” sand of the river
bed. It is the most southern of our vineyards and is
cooled in the late afternoon by Pacific breezes that
blow through the Templeton Gap in the Santa Lucia Mountains.
This phenomenon delays ripening of the grapes by a few
weeks and, together with predominately limestone and
clay soils, produces fruit with great natural acids.
Currently there are 17 different varieties planted at the Huerhuero Vineyard
to support both the vineyard designate and estate labels. Among these are
Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Malbec, Mourvedre, Petite Sirah,
Petit Verdot and Syrah along with a few other exciting varieties that flourish
in this climate.
